Eila Muriel Joice Campbell (born December 15, 1915 – died July 12, 1994) was an important English geographer and mapmaker. She was famous for her work on a book called Domesday Geography of England. She also worked on an international magazine about maps, called Imago Mundi.

Early Life and School

Eila Campbell was born on December 15, 1915. She went to school at Bournemouth School for Girls. Later, she studied at Brighton Diocesan Training College.

After that, she went to Birkbeck College, which is part of the University of London. She finished her studies there in 1941.

While studying, Eila also worked as a teacher in Southall, west London. At the same time, she was a part-time helper at Birkbeck College. She earned a special Master's degree from Birkbeck in 1946.

Eila Campbell's Career

Eila Campbell started working at Birkbeck College in 1945. She began as an assistant lecturer. She stayed at Birkbeck for her whole career.

She became a lecturer in 1948. In 1963, she became a reader. By 1970, she was a full professor and led the geography department. She retired from Birkbeck College in 1981.

Work on Famous Books and Journals

Eila Campbell was chosen by Henry Clifford Darby to help edit his book. This book was called Domesday Geography of England. She also wrote parts of this important book.

For 20 years, she was the editor of an international journal. This journal was called Imago Mundi and was all about maps.

Involvement with Societies

Eila Campbell was a long-time member of several important groups. She was part of the Society for Nautical Research. She also belonged to the Hakluyt Society. She was the honorary secretary of the Hakluyt Society for about 20 years.

She was also a member of the Royal Geographical Society for a long time. From 1971 to 1975, she served on the society's main council. She was also on the library and maps committee for over 20 years. She even led the society's special group for mapmaking.

The Royal Geographical Society gave her the Murchison Award in 1979.

Later Awards and Legacy

In 1989, Professor Campbell received another award. It was the R. V. Tooley Award from the International Map Collectors' Society.

After she passed away on July 12, 1994, Birkbeck College started a series of lectures in her name. These lectures on geography began in 1995.
