Eileen Chandler was a British painter and illustrator. She lived from 1904 to 1993. She became famous for her beautiful portraits. A portrait is a painting or drawing of a person.
Early Life and Training
Eileen was born in London, England. She loved art from a young age. She studied art at the Hornsey School of Art. She was so good that she won a special scholarship. This scholarship allowed her to study at the Royal Academy Schools. These were very important art schools.
In 1930, Eileen married Roland Chandler. He was also an artist and worked as an illustrator. Sadly, Roland passed away during World War II.
A World Traveler and Artist
After the war, Eileen Chandler traveled a lot. Even though her home was in London, she spent many years working in other countries. Her art was even shown in a famous newspaper called the Illustrated London News.
Painting Stars and Royalty
Eileen spent time in America. There, she created watercolor portraits of famous people. She painted Hollywood film stars and their children. One of her most famous portraits was of a young Liza Minnelli. Liza was only three years old at the time!
Eileen also traveled to Sweden. She received many requests to paint portraits there. She often painted children. She also painted members of the Swedish Royal Family. One notable painting was of Queen Sylvia.
Later Years and Exhibitions
Even though Eileen Chandler was more famous outside of Britain, she still had shows in her home country. In 1988, she had a special art show in London. It was at the Guy Morrison Gallery. This show featured her landscapes and portraits. Eileen Chandler passed away in 1993.
