The Eitel Hospital building, also known as "Doctors Memorial Hospital," is a historic former hospital in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It stands across from Loring Park. This building is special because it's listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It's made of brick and mostly built in the Classical Revival style. Some parts of its original design, like a fancy top edge called a cornice, were removed, making it look a bit simpler today.

History of Eitel Hospital
Building a Dream Hospital
The Eitel Hospital was started by George G. Eitel in 1912. It was built to care for wealthy people in Minneapolis. The idea for the hospital first appeared in the Minneapolis Journal newspaper in 1906. Drawings for a four-story hospital were published in 1907.
Raising money for the hospital took some time, which caused delays in building. In 1911, new drawings showed plans for a five-story hospital. Later, there were even plans for an eight-story building. In the end, it was built with five stories and a basement.
Life Inside the Hospital
The hospital was very fancy for its time. It had sunny porches with beautiful Navajo rugs. The private patient rooms featured brass beds and furniture made of mahogany.
George Eitel's wife, Jeannette Eitel, was a nurse. She was in charge of the hospital's nursing school. The Eitels even lived in an apartment connected to the hospital. After George Eitel passed away, his nephew, George D. Eitel, took over running the hospital.
Changing Times and New Purpose
In 1982, Eitel Hospital started working closely with Abbott Northwestern Hospital. A few years later, in 1985, the hospital closed its doors. It had 144 beds at that time. After closing, the building was used as the Willow Street Center for Youth and Families.
In 2005, a company called Village Green Companies suggested a new plan for the old Eitel Hospital. They wanted to turn the historic building into apartments. They also planned to build two new six-story buildings nearby. The idea was to bring back some of the original look of the 1911 building, like rebuilding the fancy cornice. Some newer parts of the building were removed. Work on the new apartment complex began on October 25, 2006. The Eitel Building City Apartments were finished in September 2008.
