Elías García Martínez (born July 20, 1858 – died August 1, 1934) was a Spanish painter. He is remembered for his artworks, especially his portraits. However, he became widely known after an unexpected event involving one of his frescos, the Ecce Homo, in 2012.

About Elías García Martínez
Elías García Martínez was born in Requena, a town in Valencia, Spain. He began his journey as an artist there. He studied art at important schools in Spain. These included the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Carlos de Valencia and another in Barcelona.
His Life and Work
Later, Elías moved to Zaragoza. There, he married Juliana Condoy Tello. In 1894, he started working as a professor. He taught at the Escuela Provincial de Bellas Artes de Zaragoza. He taught classes like ornamental drawing and portrait painting. He continued teaching there until he retired in 1929. He also gave lectures at the Instituto de Segunda Enseñanza de Zaragoza. Elías García Martínez passed away in Utiel when he was 76 years old.
The Ecce Homo Painting
One of Elías García Martínez's paintings is a fresco called Ecce Homo. He painted it around 1930. This fresco is located in the Santuario de Misericordia in Borja, Spain.
An Unexpected Event
In August 2012, this painting became famous around the world. A local elderly woman named Cecilia Giménez tried to restore it. The painting had been damaged by humidity over time. Cecilia wanted to help fix it. She believed she had permission from the local priest to do the work.
However, Cecilia did not have professional training or experience in art restoration. Her attempt to fix the painting caused a lot of damage. The painting looked very different from its original form. Even though it was damaged, the "restored" painting became very popular. It gained ironic fame and was talked about all over the world.
