One of Elías García Martínez's paintings is a fresco called Ecce Homo. He painted it around 1930. This fresco is located in the Santuario de Misericordia in Borja, Spain.

An Unexpected Event

In August 2012, this painting became famous around the world. A local elderly woman named Cecilia Giménez tried to restore it. The painting had been damaged by humidity over time. Cecilia wanted to help fix it. She believed she had permission from the local priest to do the work.

However, Cecilia did not have professional training or experience in art restoration. Her attempt to fix the painting caused a lot of damage. The painting looked very different from its original form. Even though it was damaged, the "restored" painting became very popular. It gained ironic fame and was talked about all over the world.
