Exploring El Bosque's Past
The town of El Bosque began in 1712. It was founded by people from San Juan Chamula. They came from a place called Muken.
How El Bosque Got Its Name
On November 13, 1915, the state of Chiapas was divided into 12 departments. El Bosque became part of Simojovel. This municipality was first called San Juan Bautista. But on February 13, 1934, its name was changed to El Bosque. This change happened during a time when the government was trying to reduce the influence of the church.
When 59 new independent municipalities were created, El Bosque had two smaller areas under its control: Plátanos and San Pablo. In January 1994, during the Zapatista movement, some communities in El Bosque joined this group.
