El Carpio is a lovely city located in the province of Córdoba, in southern Spain. It's a place with a long and interesting past. As of 2018, about 4,457 people live in El Carpio. The city is situated about 138 meters (around 453 feet) above sea level.

A Look Back at History

El Carpio has been connected to the powerful Kingdom of Castile for a very long time. This connection began way back in the 1300s.

The Start of El Carpio

In 1325, a special area called the Señorio del Castillo de Carpio was created. This was like a large estate or territory. It was founded by a person named Garcí Méndez II de Sotomayor.

Becoming a Marquisate

Later, in 1559, the Señorio del Castillo de Carpio became even more important. King Philip II of Spain changed its status to the Marquesado del Carpio. This new title was given to Diego Lopez de Haro y Sotomayor. It was a way for the King to thank him for his loyal service.

A Grand Title

The title of Marquesado became even more special in 1640. King Philip IV of Spain added a "Grandeeship" to it. This made the title one of the highest honors in Spain. It was given to Diego de Haro y Haro, who was the fifth Marquis of El Carpio.
