History of El Carpio

The Peninsular War and the Battle

El Carpio has an important place in history, especially during a time known as the Peninsular War. This war happened a long time ago, in the early 1800s. In 1809, a big battle took place here, called the Battle of Carpio.

During this battle, Spanish soldiers, led by a general known as the Duke del Parque, fought against French troops. The French soldiers were led by General Kellermann. The Spanish army won this battle, which was a significant victory for them.

A Village Under Attack

El Carpio was very important because of its location. It was at the edge of the province of Valladolid, right next to the province of Salamanca. The village also had a very old fortress, built in the 10th century. This fortress was super important because it stood between the old kingdoms of Castilla and León.

Sadly, after the battle, the French troops completely destroyed El Carpio. This happened on November 25, 1809. They ruined the village, including its church and the strategic fortress.
