History of El Ràfol d'Almúnia
El Ràfol d'Almúnia has a long history that goes back to the time of the Arabs. It was once part of the kingdom ruled by the King Taifas of Dénia. Later, a king named James I took control, and it became part of the Crown of Aragon.
Over time, different families like the Murs, Sapenas, and Almúnia ruled the area. In 1535, El Ràfol became a parish, which is like a church district. A priest named D. Antonio Aringo was the first parish priest. He also looked after nearby villages such as Benimeli and Sagra.
After many people called the Moors left in 1610, new families moved in. There were 123 people living in 26 houses. By 1800, the town had grown quite a bit, with 429 people living in 80 houses.
In the 17th century, El Ràfol was very important. It was the center of an area called the Rectoria. It was also the main place for the Marquess of El Ràfol d'Almúnia, who was a powerful local leader. A person from Ràfol, Francesc Garcia, became famous in 1693 for fighting against the old system where powerful lords controlled everything.
