Discovering El Rourell
El Rourell is a quiet place with a rich history. It's a great example of a traditional Catalan town. Even though it's small, it has played a part in many historical events.
A Journey Through Time: El Rourell's History
Long ago, El Rourell was part of a much larger area known as Quince. Its story began to change between the years 1150 and 1158. At this time, a powerful leader named Ramon Berenguer IV, Count of Barcelona and Archbishop Bernard of Tort gave the land to the Molnells family.
The Knights Templar's Influence
Later, a member of the Molnells family, Berenguer Molnells, joined the Order of the Templars. These were famous knight-monks who were very important in medieval times. Because of this, the Templars had a big impact on El Rourell. They even set up their own group, called the Order of Rourell. This group was part of a larger area controlled by the Barony of Barberà.
Changing Hands
After some time, the Templars' order was no longer active. This meant their lands, including El Rourell, were given to the Bishopric of Tarragona. A bishopric is an area managed by a bishop, a high-ranking church official.
Later, the rights to El Rourell were passed to other important families. These included the Plegamans family and the Marquis of Vallgornera. The Marquis of Vallgornera owned a lot of land in the region. For many years, El Rourell kept some traditions from its old feudal past. This means it had a system where land was owned by lords, and people worked for them.
