El Santuario is a vibrant town and municipality located in the Antioquia Department of Colombia. It is part of the Eastern Antioquia region. The town was officially founded on March 11, 1765, by Captain Antonio Gómez de Castro. El Santuario sits high up, about 2,150 meters (7,054 feet) above sea level, enjoying a cool average temperature of 17 °C (63 °F). It's about 57 km (35 miles) from Medellín, the capital city of Antioquia. The total area of El Santuario is 83.45 km² (32.22 square miles).
