History of El Sauce
El Sauce used to be called Guayabal. The town became famous when a special statue arrived. This statue was called the Black Christ of Esquipulas. It came from Guatemala. People placed it under a willow tree. That's why the town was renamed "El Sauce," which means "The Willow" in Spanish.
El Sauce and the Railway
In the 1900s, El Sauce was an important train stop. Goods like coffee and animals were moved by train. They went to the port city of Corinto. The railway closed about 40 years ago. Its parts were sold. This greatly affected the town. Today, El Sauce is still a small town. It focuses on farming, raising bees, and livestock.
A Battle in El Sauce
El Sauce was the site of a battle on December 26, 1932. This happened during the Sandino Rebellion. American Marines and Nicaraguan National Guardsmen fought against Sandinista rebels. This was the last major battle of that war.
