Discovering Elderfields Preserve
Elderfields Preserve is home to a very old building called the Hewlett-Munson-Williams House. This farmhouse was built around 1675. That makes it one of the oldest homes still standing on Long Island!
The Hewlett Family's Long History
The Hewlett family owned this property for a very long time – 224 years! Imagine living in the same house for over two centuries.
New Owners and a New Name
In 1904, a man named Carlos W. Munson bought the farm. He was the heir to a big shipping company. Carlos and his wife, Mabel, were important people in the early days of Flower Hill. Carlos was the one who gave the farm its unique name, Elderfields.
Later, Henry de V. Williams bought the property. When he passed away in 1996, he left it to Nassau County. That's how the county came to own this historic site.
What Else Can You See?
Besides the old farmhouse, Elderfields Preserve also has a pretty walled garden. There are also two old carriage sheds, which were used to store horse-drawn carriages.
