Discovering Elderfields Preserve
The Hewlett-Munson-Williams House
At the heart of Elderfields Preserve is the Hewlett-Munson-Williams House. This old farmhouse was built around 1675. It was part of the historic Hewlett farm back then. This makes it one of the oldest homes still standing on Long Island!
The Hewlett family owned this property for a very long time, 224 years to be exact. Later, in 1904, a man named Carlos W. Munson bought the farm. He was the heir to the Munson Steamship Company. Carlos and his wife, Mabel, were important people in the early days of Flower Hill. Carlos was the one who gave the farm its name: Elderfields.
Years later, Henry de V. Williams purchased the property. When he passed away in 1996, he left the preserve to Nassau County. That's how the county came to own this amazing historic site.
What Else Can You Find?
Besides the main house, Elderfields Preserve also has other interesting features. You can explore a beautiful walled garden. There are also two old carriage sheds on the property. These buildings give you a peek into what life was like long ago.
The Art Guild at Elderfields
Elderfields Preserve is also home to The Art Guild of Port Washington. This is a fantastic place for anyone who loves art! The Art Guild offers many different art classes. They also have fun summer programs for young artists.
If you're looking for a place to create, they offer studio space too. The Art Guild regularly puts on art shows and exhibitions. These events are open to everyone and are a great way to see local art.
