Early Life and Education
Eleanor Bond was born in Winnipeg, a city in Manitoba, Canada. Her father, Herbert Bond, was a pharmacist, and her mother, Mildred MacFarlane, was a teacher.
Eleanor studied at the University of Manitoba. She earned a degree from the School of Art in 1976. Before that, she also studied English, different religions, and how to design the inside of buildings.
Eleanor Bond's Art
In the early 1980s, Eleanor Bond started creating art that showed natural places from above. These artworks often highlighted problems in the environment.
Exploring Cities and Technology
Later, in her art series like Work Station (1989) and Social Centres (1992), Bond looked at how new technology and city planning affect people. She created imaginary cities and landscapes that seemed to be in-between real and made-up places. Her early works often had long, funny titles. These large paintings were not stretched on frames. They made you think of cities as places that exist in your imagination.
Personal Artworks
More recently, Eleanor Bond created a series called Mountain of Shame (2010). These artworks included paintings and sculptures. This series was different because it focused more on personal feelings instead of social or city themes. Bond used her art to show emotions like doubt, getting older, and loss. She mapped these feelings onto the surfaces of her artworks.
Where Her Art Has Been Shown
Eleanor Bond's art has been shown in many places. She has had solo exhibitions in Canada and other countries. Some of these places include the Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art in Rotterdam and the Clocktower in New York. Her work has also been displayed at the Winnipeg Art Gallery and the Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal.
Her art has also been part of group exhibitions. These include shows at The National Gallery of Canada and the Vancouver Art Gallery.
Teaching and Involvement
Eleanor Bond has taught art and has worked as an artist in other countries. She has also been very involved with Plug In ICA in Winnipeg since it started. Her solo show, Mountain of Shame, was the first exhibition at the new Plug In ICA gallery in 2010. This show later traveled to the Alberta College of Art & Design in Calgary in 2011.
Today, Eleanor Bond is a professor at Concordia University. She teaches painting and drawing to students who are studying for advanced degrees. She also has her own art studio in the North End, Winnipeg.
