Eleanor de Braose was a noblewoman born around 1228. She came from a very powerful family in England and Wales. Eleanor was a wealthy heiress, meaning she was set to inherit a lot of land and money.

Her father was William de Braose, a strong lord who controlled lands near the border of England and Wales, known as the Welsh Marches. Her mother was Eva Marshal, who also came from a very important family of Earls of Pembroke. Eleanor married Humphrey de Bohun and had several children.

Eleanor's Family Background

Eleanor was born in about 1228. She was the youngest of four daughters. Her father, William de Braose, was a powerful "Marcher lord." This meant he ruled important areas along the border between England and Wales. Both her parents owned a lot of land in the Welsh Marches and in Ireland.

Eleanor's mother, Eva Marshal, was a daughter of William Marshal, 1st Earl of Pembroke. He was a famous knight and a very important earl. Eva's mother was Isabel de Clare, 4th Countess of Pembroke. Eleanor had three older sisters: Isabella de Braose, Maud de Braose, Baroness Mortimer, and Eva de Braose.

Eleanor's Marriage and Children

Eleanor became the first wife of Humphrey de Bohun. Their marriage happened sometime after August 1241. Humphrey was the son of Humphrey de Bohun, 2nd Earl of Hereford. His family was also very important and powerful.

Humphrey and Eleanor had four children together:

  • Humphrey de Bohun, 3rd Earl of Hereford (born around 1249 – died 1298). He later married Maud de Fiennes and had his own children.
  • Gilbert de Bohun (born 1251 – died 1297). He also had a son named Gilbert. Eleanor's lands in Ireland were given to him by his brother.
  • Eleanor de Bohun (died 1314). She married Robert de Ferrers, 6th Earl of Derby. They had at least two sons and one daughter.
  • Margery de Bohun (lived between 1265 and 1280). She married Theobald de Verdun. They had a son, also named Theobald.

Eleanor de Braose passed away in 1251. She was buried at Llanthony Secunda Priory. Her eldest son, Humphrey, inherited her valuable lands in the Welsh Marches.
