José Eleazar López Contreras (born May 5, 1883 – died January 2, 1973) was a very important person in Venezuelan history. He served as the president of Venezuela from 1935 to 1941. Before becoming president, he was a general in the army. He also worked closely with the previous leader, Juan Vicente Gómez, and was his War Minister starting in 1931.

One notable thing López Contreras did was in 1939. He allowed two ships, the Koenigstein and Caribia, to enter Venezuela. These ships were carrying Jewish people who were fleeing from Germany during a difficult time. This act showed Venezuela's kindness and willingness to help those in need.
