Elena Yanovna Braverman is a talented mathematician from Russia, Israel, and Canada. She is famous for her work on special types of math problems. These problems help us understand how things change over time.

Her research includes delay differential equations, which are like puzzles where the future depends on what happened in the past. She also studies difference equations, which look at changes happening step-by-step. Another important area she works on is population dynamics. This helps us understand how groups of living things, like animals or people, grow or shrink.

Elena Braverman is a professor of mathematics at the University of Calgary in Canada. She also helps lead a science journal called Advances in Difference Equations.

Elena Braverman's Journey in Math

Early Life and Studies

Elena Braverman grew up in the Soviet Union. She loved learning and went to Perm State University. There, she earned her first two degrees in 1981 and 1983. Later, in 1990, she earned her Ph.D. from Ural State University. Her special project for her Ph.D. was about "Linear impulsive functional differential equations." Her teacher, Nikolai V. Azbelev, helped her a lot.

Moving and Teaching

In 1992, Elena moved to Israel. She started working at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology. For about ten years, she taught math at the Technion and at the ORT Braude College of Engineering.

In 2001, she visited Yale University in the United States. Then, in 2002, she moved to Canada. She began teaching at the University of Calgary. She became a permanent professor there in 2007. By 2011, she was promoted to a full professor. This means she is a very respected and experienced teacher and researcher.

Books and Family

A Book on Equations

Elena Braverman helped write a math book called Nonoscillation Theory of Functional Differential Equations with Applications. It was published in 2012. She wrote it with three other mathematicians: Ravi P. Agarwal, Leonid Berezansky, and Alexander Domoshnitsky. This book helps other scientists learn more about complex math problems.

Her Family's Math and Science Roots

Elena comes from a family of smart scientists! Her father, Yan Petrovich Lumel'skii, was also a mathematician. He studied mathematical statistics. Her mother, Ludmila Mikhailovna Tsirulnikova, taught physics at a university. Elena's grandfather, Mikhail Yuryevich Tsirulnikov, was an engineer who designed weapons.

Elena Braverman also has a son, Mark Braverman. He is also a very smart mathematician who works in computer science. It seems a love for math and science runs in their family!
