In 1992, Elena moved to Israel. She started working at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology. For about ten years, she taught math at the Technion and at the ORT Braude College of Engineering.

In 2001, she visited Yale University in the United States. Then, in 2002, she moved to Canada. She began teaching at the University of Calgary. She became a permanent professor there in 2007.
