The grass coqui (also called coqui de las hierbas) is a small frog that lives only in Puerto Rico. This means it is endemic to Puerto Rico, so you won't find it naturally anywhere else in the world! It belongs to a frog family called Eleutherodactylidae.
These tiny frogs like to live in many different places. You can find them in warm, wet forests, both in low areas and on mountains. They also live in grasslands that get wet or flooded sometimes. You might even spot them in plantations (like coffee farms) or in gardens in the countryside. They can even survive in forests that have been changed a lot by people.
Sadly, the grass coqui is facing a threat: its habitat loss. This means the places where it lives are disappearing, which makes it harder for these special frogs to survive.

About the Grass Coqui
The scientific name for the grass coqui is Eleutherodactylus brittoni. It was first described by a scientist named Karl Patterson Schmidt in 1920.
Where They Live
Grass coquis are very adaptable. They can be found in many different types of environments across Puerto Rico.
Forest Homes
They live in subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests, which are warm and rainy. They also live in montane forests, which are forests found on mountains.
Open Areas
You might also find them in grasslands that are wet or get flooded during certain seasons. They can even live in places like farms (plantations) and people's gardens in rural areas. Even forests that have been heavily changed by human activity can sometimes be home to these resilient frogs.
Protecting the Grass Coqui
The biggest challenge for the grass coqui is habitat loss. This happens when their natural homes are destroyed or changed. This can be due to things like building new houses, roads, or farms. Protecting their habitats is important to make sure these unique frogs continue to thrive in Puerto Rico.
