The Eleutherodactylus intermedius is a special kind of frog. It belongs to a group of frogs called Eleutherodactylidae. This frog is found only in eastern Cuba. This means it is endemic to that area.

You can find it in the Sierra Maestra and Sierra del Cobre mountains. People often call it the Pico Turquino robber frog. This name comes from the place where it was first discovered.

What Does the Pico Turquino Robber Frog Look Like?

These frogs are quite small. Male frogs grow to about 17 millimeters long. Female frogs are a little bigger, reaching about 20 millimeters. That's less than an inch!

Their color can be different. Some are light gray, while others are very dark brown. They often have cool patterns. These patterns can look like swirls or spots. Some frogs even have thin, whitish lines on their backs. These lines can be on the sides or right down the middle.

Their fingers and toes are small. They do not have special sticky pads, called digital discs. Also, their toes are not webbed. This is different from many other frogs.

Where Do These Frogs Live?

The Pico Turquino robber frog lives in moist forests. These are forests where it is often wet and the trees grow close together.

These frogs are mostly active at night. During the day, they like to hide. They find safe spots under rocks, logs, or other things on the forest floor. This helps them stay safe from predators.

Why Are These Frogs in Danger?

Even in places where they should live, these frogs are not common. They are quite rare. The biggest threat to them is habitat loss. This means their forest homes are disappearing.

Even though they live in protected areas, like Turquino National Park and La Bayamesa National Park, their homes are still at risk. It is important to protect these forests. Protecting their habitat helps these unique frogs survive.
