Elias of Dereham (died 1245) was a very skilled English builder and designer. He worked closely with Bishop Jocelin of Wells. Elias is most famous for his work on Salisbury Cathedral.

Elias of Dereham: Master Builder

Elias became a Canon in Salisbury, which meant he was an important church official. He was put in charge of building the amazing Salisbury Cathedral. This was a huge project! He also helped with construction at Clarendon Palace, another important building.

Elias and the Magna Carta

Elias of Dereham played a special role with the Magna Carta. This was a very important document signed in 1215. It helped set rules for the king's power. Elias was actually at Runnymede in 1215 when the Magna Carta was first created. He helped give out copies of this important document to different parts of England. One of these original copies is still kept safe today. You can see it in a special room at Salisbury Cathedral called the chapter house. Elias of Dereham died in 1245.
