Exploring the Elijah Locke House
The Elijah Locke House sits in a quiet, country-like neighborhood in central Rye. You can find it where Grove Road and Central Road meet. It is a two-and-a-half-story house made of wood. It has a roof that slopes down on two sides and a chimney in the middle. The outside is covered with overlapping wooden boards called clapboards.
What Does the House Look Like?
The front of the house looks like a typical Georgian-style home. It has five sections, or "bays," across the front. The main door is right in the center. This door has a special section that sticks out, with a small pointed roof above it. The door itself is framed by flat columns called pilasters. It also has a triangular decoration above it, known as a pediment.
At the back of the house, there's a single-story part that was added later. This addition also dates back to the 1700s. Inside the house, many original features have been kept. However, it has also been updated to be more modern.
Other Buildings on the Property
The property also has other old buildings. These include a barn and a carriage house. Both of these buildings seem to have been built in the early to mid-1800s. Two other buildings from the 1800s that used to be there have since been taken down.
The History of the Locke Family Home
The Elijah Locke House has a long history connected to one of New Hampshire's first families. Captain John Locke was one of the very first people to settle in New Hampshire. He arrived there in 1644.
Who Built This Old House?
Historians believe this house was built by either John Locke's son, William, in 1729, or his grandson, Elijah, in 1739. A cool clue is that the date "1739" is carved into one of the original roof beams inside the house. This makes many people think Elijah built it.
Captain John Locke was killed by Native Americans in 1696 during a conflict called King William's War. His son, William, was a shop owner in a nearby town called Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Over the years, the Elijah Locke House has often been owned by members of the Locke family, though sometimes it has been sold to others.
