Early Boxing Days
Elijah Tillery was born in Albany, New York. Before he became a professional, he had a strong amateur boxing record. He won 45 matches and only lost 2. This showed he had a lot of talent and potential in the sport.
Professional Career Highlights
Tillery started his professional boxing career in 1980. He was known as a powerful heavyweight boxer who hit hard. He had many fights, but he is most remembered for two specific matches against another famous boxer, Riddick Bowe, in 1991.
His first fight with Bowe had a very unusual ending. After the first round, which Bowe seemed to be winning, things got a bit chaotic. Tillery and Bowe had an unexpected incident after the bell, which led to a lot of confusion in the ring. Because of this unusual behavior, Tillery was disqualified from the match, and Bowe was given the win. This decision surprised many people watching the fight.
They had a rematch just two months later. In this second fight, Bowe was very strong and won by a technical knockout (TKO) in the fourth round. This was the first time Tillery had lost a fight by TKO.
Tillery's very next fight was his last professional match. Two years after his fights with Bowe, he lost by TKO to James Smith. After this, Elijah Tillery retired from professional boxing.
