Elisa Carrillo Cabrera, born in 1981, is a famous ballet dancer from Mexico. She is one of the main dancers, called a principal dancer, with the Berlin State Ballet in Germany. She also helps lead the Mexican National Dance Company.

Early Life and Ballet Training

Elisa Carrillo was born in Texcoco, State of Mexico. She started her dance journey very young. From 1988 to 1990, she attended an art school. This school was part of the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes y Literatura.

After that, she continued her studies at the National School of Classical and Contemporary Dance. This school is also part of the same important institute in Mexico. In 1997, Elisa moved to the United Kingdom. She studied at the English National Ballet School until 1999.

Later, she trained in Germany at the John Cranko Schule Stuttgart. She studied there from 2001 to 2003. After finishing her training, she earned a special title. The German Ministry of Education named her a Master of Ballet.

Elisa Carrillo's Professional Career

Elisa Carrillo joined the Stuttgart Ballet in 1999. She started as a member of the corps de ballet. This means she was part of the large group of dancers. Before leaving in 2007, she became a soloist. A soloist is a dancer who performs alone or with a few others.

After leaving Stuttgart Ballet, Elisa joined the Berlin State Ballet. She started as a demi-soloist. By 2011, she became a principal dancer. This is the highest rank a ballet dancer can achieve.

Elisa also works as the artistic director of the Sir Anton Dolin Foundation. An artistic director helps guide the creative side of a dance company.

Helping Other Dancers

Elisa Carrillo wanted to help other dancers from Mexico. So, she started the Elisa Carrillo Cabrera Foundation. This foundation helps young Mexican dancers train in other countries.

Since 2018, she has also hosted a special event. It's an annual international dance festival called Danzatlán. This festival includes a big gala event called Elisa y Amigos. It brings together many talented dancers.

Major Awards and Performances

In 2019, Elisa won a very important award. It was the Prix Benois de la Danse. This award is like the "Oscars of Dance." She won it for her role as Juliet in Nacho Duato's Romeo and Juliet.

Elisa was the second Mexican dancer to win this award. The first was Isaac Hernández the year before. She was also the first woman from Latin America to receive this honor.

Elisa Carrillo has performed all over the world. She has made guest appearances in many countries. These include France, Japan, China, the USA, Korea, Italy, Switzerland, and Singapore.

Elisa Carrillo is married to Mikhail Kaniskin. He is also a principal dancer with the Berlin State Ballet.
