Elisabeth Larsson (scientific computing) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Elisabeth Larsson, born on December 30, 1971, is a brilliant Swedish scientist. She is an expert in applied mathematics and numerical analysis. This means she uses math to solve real-world problems and works with computers to make calculations super fast. She is a professor at Uppsala University in Sweden. She also leads a special center there that uses advanced computer science.

What She Studies

Elisabeth Larsson's research focuses on using special math tools called radial basis functions. She uses these tools for something called scientific computing. This is where computers help solve big science and engineering challenges.

Her work has helped us understand many things, like:

  • How sound travels through water.
  • How to figure out the value of financial options (like buying or selling stocks).
  • How to create computer models to understand the Earth's climate.

Her Journey to Science

Elisabeth Larsson was born on December 30, 1971, in a place called Ljusdal, Sweden. She also went to high school there.

She studied at Uppsala University and earned a master's degree in engineering physics in 1994. Later, in 2000, she got her Ph.D. (a very high university degree) in numerical analysis from the same university. Her Ph.D. paper was about solving complex math problems using computers.

After her Ph.D., she started working as a junior researcher at Uppsala University in 2001. She became an assistant professor in 2007. She then moved up to senior lecturer in 2011 and finally became a full professor in 2020.

Awards and Recognition

In 2007, Elisabeth Larsson received a special award. She was one of two winners of the Göran Gustafsson Award. This award celebrates amazing young Swedish scientists who have done outstanding work.
