Elisabeth of Swabia (also known as Beatrice) was a queen of Castile and Leon in the 1200s. She was born in March or May 1205 and passed away on November 5, 1235. She belonged to a powerful family called the House of Hohenstaufen. Elisabeth became queen by marrying Ferdinand III of Castile, who was the King of Castile and Leon.

Early Life and Family
Elisabeth was born in Nuremberg, a city in Germany. She was the fourth daughter of Philip of Swabia, who was the King of Germany. Her mother was Irene Angelina, whose father was Emperor Isaac II Angelos of the Byzantine Empire.
When Elisabeth was very young, her life changed greatly. Her father was murdered in June 1208. Soon after, in August, her mother died from problems after giving birth. Elisabeth and her sisters were then cared for by their cousin, King Frederick Roger of Sicily. He helped arrange Elisabeth's marriage to King Ferdinand III of Castile.
Becoming Queen of Castile
Elisabeth and Ferdinand III were married on November 30, 1219, in the city of Burgos, Spain. When she arrived in Castile, she took on a new name: Beatrice. This name was likely chosen to honor her older sister, Empress Beatrice, who had died in 1212. It also honored her youngest sister, who had died at birth in 1208.
In 1230, Beatrice officially became queen. This happened after her father-in-law, King Alfonso IX of Leon, passed away.
Children of Queen Beatrice
During her marriage to King Ferdinand III, Queen Beatrice had ten children. They were:
- Alfonso X (born 1221), who later became known as the Wise.
- Frederick (born before 1223).
- Ferdinand (born before 1225).
- Eleanor (born 1226), who died when she was young.
- Berengaria (born 1228), who became a nun.
- Henry (born before 1230).
- Philip (born before 1231).
- Sancho (born 1233), who became an Archbishop.
- Manuel (born 1234), who was a lord.
- Maria (born and died before 1235).
Death and Burial
Queen Beatrice passed away in Toro, Spain, on November 5, 1235. She was about 30 years old. Her death might have been related to her last childbirth.
She was first buried in the Royal Monastery of Huelgas de Burgos. Later, in 1279, her son Alfonso X moved her body to Seville Cathedral. This was the same place where her husband, King Ferdinand III, was buried.
