Manuel's Early Life and Role
Manuel was born in a town called Carrión de los Condes. He was named Manuel to honor his grandmother, who came from the grand Byzantium empire.
Becoming a Lord
In 1252, Manuel was given the Seigneury of Villena. This was like his own special area to govern. It was created as an "apanage," which meant it would return to the main kingdom if his family line ended without a new leader. Over time, this area grew to include cities along the Vinalopó River, like Elda, Aspe, Crevillent, and Elche. He also became the Adelantado (a high-ranking official) of the Kingdom of Murcia.
Serving the King
In 1259, Manuel traveled to Italy. He was part of a group sent by his father to meet Pope Alexander IV. Later, when his brother, Alfonso X the Wise, became king, Manuel served him closely. He held important roles like Alférez (royal standard-bearer) and Majordomo (head of the royal household).
Manuel passed away in Peñafiel in 1283. He was buried in the Monastery of Uclés. His son, Juan Manuel, took over his lands. Juan Manuel later became a famous medieval writer.
Manuel of Castile was part of the royal House of Burgundy. But he also started his own new family branch, known as the House of Manuel of Villena.
