Violante Manuel of Castile (born around 1265 in Castile – died in Lisbon, 1314) was an important noblewoman from the Kingdom of Castile. She was the daughter of Manuel of Castile and his first wife, Constance of Aragon. Violante was a powerful lady in her own right, meaning she inherited control over several towns and lands. These included Elche, Elda, Novelda, Medellín, and half of Peñafiel.
Violante Manuel's Tomb
When Violante Manuel passed away, her body was buried in the Convent of Santo Domingo in Lisbon. Sadly, her tomb was destroyed much later during the big 1755 Lisbon earthquake.
Her Children
Violante Manuel married Afonso of Portugal, Lord of Portalegre. Together, they had five children:
- Afonso of Portugal, Lord of Leiria
- Maria of Portugal, Lady of Meneses and Orduña
- Isabel of Portugal, Lady of Penela, who married Juan de Castilla y Haro. They had children.
- Constança of Portugal, Lady of Portalegre, who married Nuño González de Lara. They did not have children.
- Beatriz of Portugal, Lady of Lemos, who was the first wife of Pedro Fernández de Castro. They also did not have children.
