Elise Blumann (born January 16, 1897, in Parchim, Germany – died January 29, 1990, in Nedlands, Western Australia) was an artist. She was born in Germany but became known as an Australian Expressionist painter.
Blumann studied at the Royal School of Art in Berlin from 1917 to 1919. During this time, she also made friends with artists at the Academy of Arts. Blumann once said that the famous artist Max Liebermann painted her portrait and taught her. However, there is no proof to confirm this.
After her studies, Blumann taught in different schools in Germany from 1920 to 1923. She then married Arnold Blumann. In 1934, she and her husband left Germany because of the difficult political situation. They arrived in Fremantle, Western Australia, on January 4, 1938, aboard the ship Ormonde.
Life and Art in Australia
After arriving in Western Australia, Blumann created many paintings. She painted the unique Australian landscape, her family, and her new friends. Her art showed the special light and colors of Western Australia. Her style was influenced by her knowledge of German Expressionism.
She also helped start the Art Group with Robert Campbell, who was then the Curator of the Art Gallery of Western Australia. This group was a place for artists to discuss ideas. Blumann used it to share modern art ideas and ways of teaching art.
Later Years and Recognition
In the 1950s, Blumann felt less hopeful about art in Western Australia. She painted only sometimes. Her work first became known across Australia in the late 1970s. This was about 15 years before she passed away in 1990, at 93 years old.
Since then, Elise Blumann has been recognized as a very important artist in Australian modern painting. Her work helped set the stage for other Western Australian painters like Guy Grey-Smith and Howard Taylor. These artists also focused on the landscape in their modern art.
