History of Elizabeth
Elizabeth was once known as the "Town of Elizabeth." It officially became a town on January 23, 1964. This happened when Governor Jimmie H. Davis signed a special paper. Elizabeth was the fifth town in Allen Parish to become officially recognized.
How Elizabeth Got Its Name
The name Elizabeth was chosen to honor the daughter of Sam Parks. He was one of the people who started the Industrial Lumber Company's Calcasieu Paper Mill. Elizabeth was carefully planned as a company town. This means it was built mainly to support the lumber mill. The town even had its own hospital for the mill workers. Today, this old hospital building is used as Elizabeth's Village Hall.
