Her Journey into Botany
Early Career and Training
Jill Cowley started her career working with plants at a nursery in Tadworth, Surrey. A nursery is a place where plants are grown and sold. In 1958, she took a special course in horticulture. Horticulture is the art and science of growing plants. She studied at Merrist Wood Farm Institute.
After her studies, she worked at Elm Garden Nurseries in Claygate for eight years. She then gained more experience working in Geneva, Switzerland. Later, she worked at Millers of Send, near Guildford, England.
Working at Kew Gardens
In 1968, Jill Cowley began working at Kew Gardens. She first worked in the Temperate House, which is a large greenhouse for plants from warmer climates. She focused on the Himalaya section of the gardens.
In 1972, she moved to the Herbarium at Kew. A herbarium is like a library for dried plant specimens. Scientists use these collections to study and identify plants. Here, she worked on a group of plants called petaloid monocots. These are flowering plants that have petals, like lilies.
Jill Cowley retired from her full-time role in 2000. However, she continued to be an Honorary Research Associate. This means she kept helping with research at Kew Gardens.
Collecting Plants Around the World
During her career, Jill Cowley went on exciting trips to collect plant samples. These trips helped her study plants in their natural homes. She traveled to places like Korea, Turkey, and China to find and collect different plant species.
Personal Life
Elizabeth Jill Bedwell married Richard Cowley in 1970. Richard Cowley was also a student at Kew Gardens.
