Elizabeth Mansfield (mathematician) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Elizabeth Louise Mansfield is an Australian mathematician. She studies how things move and how to keep track of important rules (called conservation laws) in computer models of physical systems. She is a very important member of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications, a group for mathematicians. She was even a Vice-President there for a few years!

Who is Elizabeth Louise Mansfield?

Elizabeth Mansfield made history at the University of Kent in the UK. She was the first woman to become a full professor of mathematics there. This was a big step for women in science! She also helped edit a math journal called the LMS Journal of Computation and Mathematics.

Her Education and Career

Professor Mansfield earned her highest degree, a Ph.D., from the University of Sydney in Australia in 1992. Her special project for this degree was about something called Differential Gröbner Bases. Today, she teaches as a professor at the University of Kent in their School of Mathematics, Statistics and Actuarial Science.

Important Contributions

Professor Mansfield is so well-known that a math equation is partly named after her! It's called the Estevez–Mansfield–Clarkson equation.

She also wrote a helpful book for students and other mathematicians. It's called A Practical Guide to the Invariant Calculus. This book teaches about a special math method called "moving frames."

In 2018, she helped organize a big event in London called the Noether Celebration. This event honored the work of a famous mathematician named Emmy Noether. Professor Mansfield says Emmy Noether's work has really inspired her own studies.
