Elizabeth Teft was a writer from the 1700s. She wrote many different kinds of poems. These poems were collected in a book called a miscellany. Her poems often talked about current events or politics of her time. Not much is known about her life, but her writing is still studied today.

Who Was Elizabeth Teft?

We don't know a lot about Elizabeth Teft's life. Most of what we know comes from her own writings. Some experts think she was from a middle-class family and was part of the Anglican church.

Her Birth and Family History

Records show an Elizabeth Teft was born in Rothwell, Lincolnshire in 1723. However, that child seems to have died very young. It was common back then to give the same name to another child born later in the family. So, the writer Elizabeth Teft might have been born after 1724. Her father's name was likely Joshua Teft.

What Did Elizabeth Teft Write About?

Even though her life is a bit of a mystery, people have always enjoyed Elizabeth Teft's poems. Many readers feel her writing shows she was a very independent thinker.

Poems About Education

In one poem, "On Learning. Desired by a Gentleman," she shared her thoughts on how girls and women were educated. She believed that girls should have better learning opportunities.

Other Interesting Topics

Elizabeth Teft also wrote about friendship and politics. She even wrote about popular books of her time. For example, in "To the Unjust Author of Pamela in High Life," she criticized a famous writer named Samuel Richardson. She didn't like how he ended his popular novel Pamela, or Virtue Rewarded. Teft thought the main character, Pamela, got a "harsh reward" by marrying the man who had caused her trouble.

Some of her poems were about big news events, like a battle where the Duke of Cumberland won against rebels. Elizabeth Teft also used humor in her writing. In "On Viewing Herself in a Glass," she joked about her own looks, asking if nature was "angry" when it made her.
