Meet Elizabeth Watkin-Jones

Elizabeth Watkin-Jones was born in Nefyn, Wales, on July 13, 1887. She grew up to become a teacher and a writer. She loved creating stories, especially for young readers.

Her Writing Journey

Elizabeth Watkin-Jones started her writing career by creating stories in English. These stories were published in popular children's magazines like Chicks' Own and Fairyland Tales.

Later, she began writing in Welsh, her native language. This is where she truly shined! Between 1939 and 1949, she won many important awards. She earned these at the National Eisteddfod, which is a big festival in Wales that celebrates Welsh culture, including writing. She won awards for her amazing stories, novels, and plays for children.

Elizabeth also wrote for several Welsh language magazines. These included Tywysydd y Plant, Trysorfa'r Plant (which means The Children's Treasury), and Cymru'r Plant. She also wrote a lot for a comic called Hwyl.

Books She Wrote

Elizabeth Watkin-Jones wrote five books filled with short plays for children. Some of these plays were Onesimus (published in 1947) and Pwt a Moi (published in 1953).

She also wrote seven novels, or longer historical stories, all for children. She wrote these between 1939 and 1955. Her personal favorite was a book called Plant y Mynachdy, which came out in 1939. Most of her novels, except for Y Dryslwyn (1947), were set in her hometown of Nefyn.

Here is a list of some of her well-known works:

  • Plant y Mynachdy (1939)
