Ella Jones (born 1955) is an American scientist, pastor, and politician. She is currently the 12th mayor of Ferguson, Missouri. Jones made history as the first African-American person and the first woman to be elected mayor of Ferguson. Before becoming mayor, she served on the Ferguson City Council.

Learning and Education

Jones studied chemistry at the University of Missouri–St. Louis. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree there.

Her Career Journey

Before entering politics, Ella Jones worked as a scientist. She was a high-pressure liquid chromatographer. This means she studied different chemicals. She worked at the Washington University School of Medicine. She also worked at KV Pharmaceutical. Later, she became a sales director for Mary Kay.

Joining the City Council

In April 2015, Jones made history again. She was the first African-American person elected to the Ferguson City Council. She represented the city's first ward. In February 2020, she was chosen to join an important group. This group advises the United States Environmental Protection Agency. It helps local governments with environmental issues.

Becoming Mayor

In 2017, Jones ran for mayor of Ferguson. She received a lot of votes. This election was important for the city.

On June 2, 2020, Jones ran for mayor again. She won the election against Heather Robinett. Jones took over from the previous mayor, James Knowles III. He could not run again because of term limits. On June 17, 2020, Ella Jones was sworn in. She became the first Black and first female mayor of Ferguson.

Ella Jones is also a pastor. She serves in the African Methodist Episcopal Church.
