A Home Designed by an Architect

Who Was Ellamae Ellis League?

Ellamae Ellis League was a famous architect from Georgia in the 1900s. She was known for her unique designs.

Why Was This House Special?

In 1940, Ellamae's children were grown up and in college. She no longer needed to live near schools or her work. So, she decided to design her very own home.

She built it in a new area called the Shirley Hills neighborhood. This area was northwest of downtown Macon.

When Was the House Built?

Ellamae League lived in this house from 1940 until she passed away in 1991. The house was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places in February 2005. It was even featured by the National Park Service during Women's History Month in 2005.

This house was the first "mid-century ranch house" in Georgia to be added to the National Register.

What Does It Look Like?

The League House is a type of home called a ranch house. It has an interesting "split-level" design. This means different parts of the house are on slightly different floor levels.

This style became very popular later on. But Ellamae's house was one of the first of its kind in Georgia. Only two other homes like it were built before it. It showed a new way of building homes, moving away from older styles like the bungalow.

What Materials Were Used?

The house has garages on the lowest level, which is like a basement. The main living areas are on the first floor. The bedrooms are on a slightly higher second level.

Ellamae League once said she didn't like the common brick used in Macon homes. So, she chose to cover her house with redwood siding instead. This gave it a unique and natural look.
