Ellen Brown Lake is a natural freshwater lake located in Pictou County, Nova Scotia, Canada. It is an important part of the local water system in this beautiful Canadian province.
Where is Ellen Brown Lake?
Ellen Brown Lake is found in the upper part of the St. Mary's River system. This means it's one of the first lakes that feeds into the river's West Branch.
The lake lies just north of the Nelson River. The Nelson River is another stream that flows into the St. Mary's River.
Why is Water Quality Important?
Scientists from Environment Canada studied the water quality of Ellen Brown Lake in 1997. They wanted to understand how healthy the lake was for plants and animals.
They looked at several things:
- Alkalinity: This measures how well the water can handle pollution that makes it more acidic. The lake had an alkalinity of 2 mg/L.
- pH: This tells us how acidic or basic the water is. A pH of 7 is neutral. Ellen Brown Lake had a pH of 6.29, which is slightly acidic.
- Total Nitrogen: Nitrogen is a nutrient that plants need to grow. Too much can cause problems like too much algae. The lake had 0.112 mg/L of nitrogen.
- Total Phosphorus: Phosphorus is another important nutrient. Like nitrogen, too much can harm the lake. The lake had 0.0049 mg/L of phosphorus.
These measurements help scientists keep track of the lake's health over time.
