About Ellen C. Covito
Ellen C. Covito was born in 1974. She grew up to become a composer, which means she writes music. She is from Argentina, a country in South America.
Her Early Music
When Ellen first started writing music, she tried to mix ideas about the environment with her songs. She wanted to show how music could connect with problems and ideas about our planet.
Mixing Composition and Improvisation
Since 2009, Ellen's music has explored a cool idea: how are composing (writing music down carefully) and improvisation (making music up on the spot) different? She tries to make these two ways of creating music feel closer together.
She does this by changing how much the musician is separate from the music they play. She also tries to make the moment of writing music and playing it feel like the same thing. It's like she wants the music to be both planned and spontaneous at the same time!
Concerts Around the World
In May 2012, Ellen's music was played for the first time outside her home city of Buenos Aires. This special concert happened in Brooklyn, a part of New York City. It was put together by two groups called Panoply Performance Laboratory and No Collective.
Later that year, in September 2012, another concert of her music was held in Tokyo, Japan. This concert was also organized by No Collective, along with a group called the Ensemble for Experimental Theatre and Music.
