About Her Books
Ellen Emerson White wrote her first book, a mystery called Friends for Life, in 1983. She was a student at Tufts University at the time. The next year, she wrote The President's Daughter, which was the first book in a series of four.
Besides her fiction books, Ms. White has also written biographies about sports stars and historical stories. She wrote four books about the Vietnam War, using the pen name Zack Emerson. She named Zack after her shepherd dog. She also wrote the Santa Paws series under another pen name, Nicholas Edwards.
The young characters in White's books are very real. They often face big challenges like war, mysteries, or other tough situations. But her stories always focus on how these characters overcome their problems and become stronger. Even though their lives are not "ordinary," readers can still relate to them.
Sometimes, characters or places from one of White's books show up in another. For example, a character named Trudy from The President's Daughter series is from Brighton, Boston. This is the same part of Boston where Molly and Patrick live in Where Have All the Flowers Gone?. Also, many of Ellen Emerson White's main characters love animals, just like she does!
