Ellen Longmire facts for kids
Ellen Kathryn Longmire is a super smart scientist and engineer! She studies how liquids and gases move, which is called fluid dynamics. She's also a mechanical engineer, which means she designs and builds things that move. Right now, she's a professor at the University of Minnesota. She also helps lead the College of Science & Engineering there. She used to be in charge of a big group called the American Physical Society Division of Fluid Dynamics. She also helps edit a science magazine called Experiments in Fluids.

Becoming a Scientist and Engineer
Ellen went to Princeton University and studied physics. She graduated in 1982. After that, she worked at a few companies. Then, she went to Stanford University to study mechanical engineering. She earned her master's degree in 1985. She then got her Ph.D. in 1990. A Ph.D. is the highest degree you can get!
Her Career at the University of Minnesota
In 1990, Ellen became a professor at the University of Minnesota. She teaches about aerospace engineering and mechanics. She became a full professor in 2003. In 2018, she became an associate dean. This means she helps manage the College of Science & Engineering.
Leading in Fluid Dynamics
In 2016, Ellen was the leader of the American Physical Society Division of Fluid Dynamics. This is a big group of scientists who study how fluids move.
Special Recognition
In 2006, Ellen was named a Fellow of the American Physical Society. This is a special honor! She got it because she did amazing experiments. Her work helped us understand how fluids move in tricky ways. She also created new ways to study fluid movement.
