Ellis was started a long time ago, on April 27, 1893. When it was first founded, it had a different name: Scoopville. The name was later changed to Ellis. Most people believe the current name honors a person named A. B. Ellis, who worked for the railroad.

The Ellis & Eastern Railroad

A railroad company called the Ellis & Eastern Railroad has its main base in Ellis. This railroad line stretches for about 14.5 miles, going east from Ellis all the way to Brandon.

Trains on this railroad carry important goods. For example, in 1995, the two main types of items transported by these trains were non-metallic minerals and chemicals. These materials were mostly delivered to factories located near Sioux Falls.
