It has a special style called Greek Revival. Because of its beautiful design, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. This list helps protect important buildings in the United States.

About the Church Building

The Ellsworth Congregational Church stands on a small hill. It is on the north side of Ellsworth's main business area. You can find it where Church Street and State Street meet. This church is a large building made of wood. It has a special look called Greek Revival style.

What is Greek Revival Style?

Greek Revival style was popular in the 1800s. It copies the look of ancient Greek temples. This church has a front that sticks out. It looks like a Greek temple. There are six tall, round columns on the front. These columns are called Doric columns. They support a triangular shape at the top. This triangle is called a pediment. The corners of the building also have flat, column-like shapes. These are known as pilasters.

The Church Tower

The church building is about two and a half stories tall. On the front, it has a tall tower with many parts. The first part of the tower is square. It holds a clock. Above that is an eight-sided section. This part is called a belfry. It has an open railing around it. Above the belfry, there is a round section. This supports another eight-sided part with windows. Finally, the tall, pointed steeple rises up. A weathervane sits at the very top.

Other Parts of the Church

A wing extends from the back of the church. This part is on the northeast corner. It seems to have replaced an older building. A newer hall is also attached to the northwest side. A walkway connects this modern hall to the main church building.

History of the Congregation

The Ellsworth church group began in 1812. The main church building was constructed in 1846. A skilled builder named Thomas Lord built it. He was from Blue Hill. This church building is famous for surviving a big fire. In 1933, a fire destroyed much of Ellsworth's business district. But the Ellsworth Congregational Church stood strong.
