Church Building and History

The Ellsworth Congregational Church sits on a small hill. It is near the main business area of Ellsworth. The church is a large building made of wood. It looks like ancient Greek temples. This style is called Greek Revival.

The main part of the church is two and a half stories tall. On the front, there is a tall tower with several parts. The first part of the tower is square and holds a clock. Above that is an eight-sided (octagonal) bell tower. It has an open railing around it. Higher up, there's a round section. This supports another eight-sided part with windows. Finally, the tall steeple rises to a weather vane at the very top.

The front of the church sticks out like a porch. It has six tall, fluted (grooved) columns. These columns support a triangular roof section called a pediment. The corners of the building also have flat, column-like decorations called pilasters. A section extends from the back of the church. It seems to have replaced an older building that was there in 1881. A newer hall, called a parish hall, is connected to the church by a walkway.

The Ellsworth church group was formed in 1812. The main church building was constructed in 1846. It was built by Thomas Lord, a skilled builder from Blue Hill, Maine. This building is famous for surviving a big fire in 1933. That fire destroyed a lot of Ellsworth's business district, but the church stood strong!
