History of Elm Creek
Elm Creek was founded in 1866. This happened when the Union Pacific Railroad arrived in Buffalo County. Before the railroad, the area had many ash, elm, and cottonwood trees. Most of these trees were cut down to help build the railroad.
The village officially became a town, or "incorporated," in 1887. The railroad helped new businesses grow, especially those that built with wood. However, a big fire in 1906 destroyed many of these wooden buildings. After the fire, people used stone to rebuild the village.
In 1912, there was a contest to give the town a new name. People hoped a new name would bring more success. But the prize was never given out, and the name Elm Creek stayed the same.
