Elmer and the Dragon is an exciting children's novel by Ruth Stiles Gannett. It is the second book in the popular My Father's Dragon series. This story continues the adventures of a brave boy named Elmer Elevator. He travels with his friendly dragon companion. The book was first published in 1950. It follows My Father's Dragon and comes before The Dragons of Blueland. In this adventure, Elmer and his dragon friend find themselves stuck on a mysterious island. This island is home to many talkative animals. The book features charming black and white pictures. These pictures are lithographs drawn by Ruth Chrisman Gannett.
Elmer's New Adventure
After their amazing escape from Wild Island, Elmer Elevator and his new dragon friend are heading home. The dragon, who we later learn is named Boris, is carrying Elmer through the sky. They are flying over the ocean. Suddenly, a big storm hits. The strong winds and heavy rain make it impossible to fly. They are forced to land on a small, unknown island.
Feather Island's Secret
This new island is called Feather Island. It is a very unusual place. The island is completely covered in feathers. It is home to thousands of canaries. Elmer and the dragon meet the king and queen of the canaries. They also meet a special canary named Flute. Flute was once Elmer's pet bird. He had escaped from Elmer's house a long time ago. Flute is very happy to see Elmer again.
The canaries explain their problem to Elmer. They tell him about a hidden treasure chest. This chest was left behind by the humans who used to live on the island. The canaries have tried to dig it up for a long time. But they are too small to move the heavy dirt. Elmer decides to help his old friend Flute and the canaries.
Unearthing the Treasure
Elmer and the dragon work together to dig up the chest. It is a very difficult task. They use their strength and cleverness. Finally, they manage to uncover the old wooden chest. The canaries are very excited. They have waited a long time for this moment.
Inside the chest, they find many interesting things. There are various household items. They also discover a watch and a harmonica. The most exciting find is six bags of gold! The canaries are thrilled with their new treasures. They thank Elmer and the dragon for their help.
The Journey Home
With the chest safely opened, it is time for Elmer and the dragon to leave. The dragon flies Elmer high into the sky. They leave Feather Island and its grateful canaries behind. The dragon takes Elmer all the way back to his own house. After dropping Elmer off, the dragon flies away. He returns to his own home in Blueland. This adventure marks another exciting chapter in Elmer's life.
