Elmonica is a small, unincorporated community located in Washington County, Oregon, in the United States. An "unincorporated community" means it's a place with a shared identity but without its own local government. It's known for its unique name, which has a special story behind it.

The Story Behind the Name

Elmonica's name comes from an old train station. This station was part of the Oregon Electric Railway, a historic electric train line. The name "Elmonica" was created by combining two names: Eleanor and Monica.

How the Station Got Its Name

A man named Samuel B. Stoy owned land where the Oregon Electric Railway wanted to build its tracks. Mr. Stoy was an insurance executive from Portland. He agreed to let the railroad pass through his property. However, he had one special condition.

He asked the railway company to name the new station after his two daughters. Their names were Eleanor and Monica. The company agreed to his request. They combined the first parts of their names to create "Elmonica."

From Station to Community

Once the train station was named Elmonica, people started using that name for the area around it. This is how the entire community became known as Elmonica. It's a unique way for a place to get its name, honoring a family's history.
