The Elms building, once known as the Eagle Hotel, is a very old and important building in Mechanic Falls, Maine. You can find it where Lewiston and Elm Streets meet. It was built in 1859 and first served as a hotel.
This large building shows a beautiful style of architecture called Greek Revival. It reminds us of a time when Mechanic Falls was a busy industrial town. Because of its history and design, The Elms was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.

What Does The Elms Look Like?
The Elms is a big building made of wood. It sits on about half an acre of land. You can find it where Lewiston Street and Elm Street meet in Mechanic Falls, Maine. This is just a short distance east of the Little Androscoggin River.
The building is two and a half stories tall. It has a roof that slopes down on two sides, called a gable roof. The front of the building, which faces Elm Street, has five sections. It looks a bit like an ancient Greek temple.
Front Porch Details
The front porch is very tall, reaching two stories high. It has four strong, square posts that are decorated with grooves. These posts hold up a triangular roof section, called a pediment. A fancy railing, made of urn-shaped pieces, runs across the second floor of the porch. On the first floor, the railing is open in the middle.
Windows and Sides
The front of the building has five sections with long windows on both main floors. The main entrance is in the middle. It has narrow windows on each side and a small window above the door. In the triangular part of the roof, there are two more windows. A half-round window is centered near the very top.
The sides of the building are six sections long. The roof has four equally spaced dormer windows on each side. These windows stick out from the roof. At the back of the building, there is a porch that is one story tall. Inside, some of the original wooden decorations are still there.
A Look Back in Time: The Elms' Story
The Elms was built in 1859 by a company called A. C. Denison. When it first opened, it was known as the Eagle Hotel. It was a large hotel, with enough space for about forty rooms!
In 1870, A. C. Denison decided to live in the building himself. It became his private home. But by 1887, it was a hotel again, this time called the "Hotel Elms."
This building has always been connected to the paper mill nearby. The paper mill is just to the north of The Elms. Today, The Elms is no longer a hotel. Instead, it is home to a shop that sells antiques and crafts.
