The Eloise B. Houchens Center is a beautiful old house in Bowling Green, Kentucky. It was built in the Greek Revival style, which means it looks a bit like ancient Greek temples! This special house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in June 1980. This means it's an important building worth protecting.
A Look Back in Time
This grand house was built around 1904. A man named Francis L. Kister built it. He was once the Mayor of Bowling Green, Kentucky. A mayor is a leader who helps run a city. Mr. Kister was also a well-known builder in the early 1900s. He even helped build the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Bowling Green.
Kister and his family lived in the house for 38 years. After that, a group called the Girls Club used it. For over twenty years, it was like a "home away from home" for young girls.
Saving the House
In 1975, a new group was formed. It was called the Eloise B. Houchens Center for Women, Inc. This group is a non-profit organization. This means they don't try to make money. Their main goal was to fix up and save the house.
The inside of the house is very fancy. It has special floors made of different kinds of wood. Downstairs, the fireplaces have beautiful carvings. All the wood inside the house is shiny and polished.
What Happens There Today?
Today, the Houchens Center is a busy place! It's a cultural and educational spot for the Bowling Green community. Many clubs and groups meet there. People who are members can use it as a meeting place.
Events and Tours
Even if you're not a member, you can use the Center. It's a great place for club meetings, workshops, or parties. People even have weddings there!
One of the most popular yearly events is "Trees of Christmas." This happens every December. More than 30 decorated Christmas trees fill the house. It's a wonderful sight! You can also take tours of the house. It's open several times a week all year long.
