Els Enfarinats

Els Enfarinats is a super fun and unique festival held every year in the town of Ibi, which is in Alicante, Spain. It happens on December 28th. The name "Els Enfarinats" comes from the Valencian language and means "the floured ones" or "the breaded ones."

During this exciting day, people dress up in funny, pretend military outfits. They act out a fake takeover of the town! It's all part of the celebrations for the Day of the Innocents. While the "Enfarinats" are busy, another group called the "Casats i Fadrins" walks around the city. They are joined by a lively band of street musicians.

What Happens at Els Enfarinats?

The Day's Events

The festival starts early in the morning.

Taking Over the City

At 8:00 AM, the "Els Enfarinats" group takes over the city. They shout "New Justice!" to show they are in charge.

Choosing a Leader

Then, at 9:00 AM, there's a special "Race for Mayor." This race helps decide who will be the pretend Mayor of the "Els Enfarinats" for the day.

The "L'Aixavegó" Act

After the race, an event called L'Aixavegó takes place in the Church Square (Plaça de l'Església). This is where the "Els Enfarinats" set up their headquarters. During this act, they decide that anyone who doesn't pay a small, pretend fine will go to a fake jail. It's all part of the fun and games!

Collecting Funds

Around midday, the "Arreplegada dels Enfarinats" happens. This is a collection where the "Els Enfarinats" walk through the old parts of Ibi and the city center. They collect money, which usually goes to charity. This walk ends at the Sant Joaquim Sanctuary.

Flour, Eggs, and Fireworks!

As they "rule" the town, the "Els Enfarinats" have a blast! They throw flour bombs and eggs at each other and even set off fireworks. It's a very messy but exciting part of the festival!

The End of the "Rule"

At 5:00 PM, the "Els Enfarinats" give up their pretend power. The festival then changes to a traditional dance called the Dansà.

A Long Tradition

This fun and unique festival has been celebrated for more than 200 years! It's a very old tradition in Ibi, Spain.
