Elsie Gunborg Johansson (born May 1, 1931 – died February 15, 2025) was a Swedish writer. She was known for writing about the lives of working-class people.

Elsie Johansson's Early Life and Career

Elsie Johansson was born in Vendel, Sweden. She was the fifth child in her family. Her father worked as a statare, which was a farm worker who was paid partly in food and housing. Later, her father found work as a lumberjack and construction worker.

The Johansson family lived in a very simple cabin. This cabin and their humble life later inspired the settings in Elsie's books. A kind teacher encouraged Elsie to go to realskola in Uppsala. This was a type of secondary school. She finished school in 1948. After graduating, she started working at the post office. She got married at 18 and had her first child at 19.

Becoming a Writer

Elsie Johansson worked at the post office for 30 years. She started her writing career at the age of 48. Her first book was a collection of poems called Brorsan hade en vevgrammofon (My Brother Had a Crank Gramophone). This was in 1979.

Her first novel, Kvinnan som mötte en hund (The Woman Who Met a Dog), came out in 1984. Besides books for adults, she also wrote several books for children and teenagers.
