Elspeth McLachlan (born on 22 July 1942) is an Australian scientist who studies the brain and nerves. She is an expert on how our body's automatic nervous system works. This system controls things we don't even think about, like our heartbeat and breathing.

Dr. McLachlan's work has helped us understand how nerve signals travel. She also studies what happens when nerves are damaged, especially in the arms, legs, and spinal cord.

She was born in Bowral, a town in New South Wales, Australia.

Elspeth McLachlan went to the University of Sydney in Australia. She earned her first science degree there in 1962. Later, she completed her PhD in 1973. A PhD is a very high degree that shows someone is an expert in their field. She also received a Doctor of Science degree in 1994.

Dr. McLachlan has held many important roles throughout her career. She has worked as a professor and researcher in different universities and institutes.

  • From 1988 to 1993, she was a Professor and Head of Department at the University of Queensland.
  • She also worked as a Senior Principal Research Fellow at the Prince of Wales Medical Research Institute.
  • From 2001 to 2006, she was a Pro-Vice Chancellor (Research) at the University of New South Wales. This means she helped lead research efforts at the university.
  • Since 2007, she has been an Emeritus Professor at the University of New South Wales. This title is given to retired professors who are still highly respected.

Awards and Honours

Dr. McLachlan has received many awards for her important work in neuroscience.

  • In 1997, she was chosen as a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science. This is a big honour for top scientists in Australia.
