Elva's History
How Elva Got Its Name
Elva was started by a man named Joseph Glidden. He lived in DeKalb, Illinois. Joseph Glidden decided to name this new community after his daughter, Elva.
Early Maps and Buildings
Maps from the late 1800s and early 1900s show what Elva was like. An 1892 map of Illinois shows Elva as a small village. It had a famous grain elevator and a train station. These buildings were just south of the main road through the area.
Elva as a Train Stop
By 1910, maps called the place "Elva Station." This was because a special train track, called a spur line, connected Elva to DeKalb. This train connection was important for moving goods and people.
