Who Was Elvira of Castile?
Elvira of Castile was an important figure in the 11th and 12th centuries. She was known for her royal connections and her journey during the First Crusade. Her life involved travel and family in different parts of Europe.
Journey to the Holy Land
Elvira went with her husband, Raymond, on the First Crusade in 1096. This was a big religious journey to the Holy Land. During this trip, she was present at the siege of Tripoli. A siege is when an army surrounds a city to try and capture it. While at Tripoli, Elvira gave birth to her son, Alfonso Jordan. It seems that Elvira and Raymond may have separated before Raymond died.
Life Back in Castile
After her time with Raymond, Elvira returned to Castile. Her son, Alfonso Jordan, became the ruler of Tripoli when Raymond died in 1105. However, Elvira is not mentioned as being in Tripoli at that time. Back in Castile, she married again before 1117. Her second husband was Count Fernando Fernández de Carrión. With him, she had three more children: Diego, García, and Teresa Fernández. Teresa later married Count Osorio Martínez.
